Privacy Policy for Playbeam
Last updated: July 18, 2026
Playbeam is a macOS app that streams a video from your Mac to other devices on your own local Wi-Fi network. This policy explains what happens to your data when you use it.
Summary
Playbeam does not collect, store, transmit, or share any of your data with the developer or any third party. It has no cloud, no accounts, and no analytics. Your video is served only to devices on your own local network, and only while you are actively sharing it.
What Playbeam does with your files
- Playbeam only accesses the video (and optional subtitle) file you explicitly choose — by dragging it onto the menu bar icon or picking it from the file dialog.
- While you are sharing, Playbeam runs a small web server on your Mac so that devices on the same local network can play the video — by scanning the QR code, opening the link, or discovering it in a player like VLC or Infuse. The video is streamed directly from your Mac to those devices.
- Your video is never uploaded to any server or cloud, and is never sent anywhere off your local network. Sharing stops when you stop it or quit the app.
Network use
Playbeam makes no outbound internet connections. It does not send your files, their contents, or any information about them, or about you, to the developer or to any third party — it has no code path that connects to the internet at all. It works with no internet connection; it only needs the local Wi-Fi network shared by your devices.
When “Discoverable on your network” is turned on, Playbeam advertises the active share on your local network (using the standard DLNA/UPnP protocol) so that video apps and smart TVs on the same network can find it. This announcement stays entirely on your local network. You can turn it off in Settings.
Data collection
Playbeam does not collect:
- Personal information
- Usage analytics or telemetry
- Crash reports (beyond what macOS itself may collect system-wide, which you control separately in System Settings)
- Any identifiers, advertising or otherwise
Playbeam has no accounts, no sign-in, and no server component operated by the developer.
Third parties
Playbeam does not integrate any third-party analytics services or advertising frameworks. Nothing is shared with anyone, because nothing is collected in the first place.
Children’s privacy
Playbeam does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, for the reasons above.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes — for example, if a future version of Playbeam adds a feature that does involve data collection — this document will be updated and the change reflected in the “Last updated” date above.
